When we first envisioned Opclo, our goal was simple: to help you discover and enjoy places without the usual headaches and hiccups that often come with travel and exploration. Whether you’re venturing far from home or just rediscovering your own neighborhood, we wanted to build a tool that would keep you informed, safe, and excited about every destination on your list. The idea was to give you the power to quickly access new or existing places, prevent unexpected disruptions to your plans, and even reward you with tailored savings related to the spots you’re visiting. On top of that, we aimed to help you stay organized—allowing you to create personalized lists, jot down handy reminders, and keep track of your daily tasks or weekly goals.
Goals
When we built Opclo, our goals were that users could:
- Offer a seamless way to discover and revisit places—both familiar favorites and exciting new finds.
- Keep you informed and prepared, ensuring your plans remain uninterrupted, your journey safer, and your experiences more enjoyable.
- Provide savings that are directly tied to the places you’re interested in, so you can make the most out of every trip.
- Give you the tools to stay organized by managing personalized travel lists, setting helpful reminders, and tracking daily tasks or weekly goals.
Designing Opclo: Simple, Familiar, and Fast
The design stage was all about putting the user experience front and center. We knew from the start that we didn’t want Opclo to feel complicated or intimidating. Instead, we chose a minimalistic approach and familiar color schemes so that anyone—whether they’ve used a hundred apps or are totally new to smartphones—could pick it up and go. Every element had to be intuitive, from the navigation menus to the alert icons. Our aim was to let you find places faster than ever before, surfacing relevant information right when you need it most. Design isn’t just how something looks; it’s also about how it feels. With Opclo, we wanted the experience to feel comfortable, almost like a familiar friend guiding you along the way.
Developing Opclo: The Journey Behind the Scenes
Building Opclo wasn’t a straightforward path. We decided early on that outsourcing development was the right move for us, as we didn’t have an in-house technical co-founder or a dedicated engineering team at the start. This decision came with its own set of challenges—both technical and interpersonal. Our MVP (Minimum Viable Product) was built with Swift, and we later transitioned to Flutter for our Beta version. By making the switch to Flutter, we could create one codebase that runs seamlessly on both iOS and Android, streamlining our development process and saving time.
For anyone considering outsourcing, it’s important to understand that it involves constant communication, trust-building, and adapting to new workflows. You’re not just hiring coders; you’re assembling a team that needs to “get” your vision and your values. Managing revisions, clarifying requirements, and finding better ways to explain complex ideas are all part of the learning curve. You’re essentially becoming a project manager—overseeing progress, ensuring accountability, and guiding the development team to bring your concept to life.
Our Infrastructure: Blending Startup-Friendly Tools with Custom Solutions
On the technical side, we chose to build our infrastructure around Flutter for the mobile front-end and Firebase on the back-end. Why Firebase? It’s startup-friendly, allowing us to track analytics, key events, and user interactions without needing a massive in-house operations team. At the same time, we built a custom backend for specific functionalities like Push Notifications, User Management, Coupon Distribution, and Promotional Campaigns. By mixing Firebase’s ready-to-use services with our own backend solutions, we can maintain agility and flexibility as we continue to evolve. Our approach ensures we can respond quickly to user feedback and scale as the app grows, all while keeping data secure and the experience smooth.
How Opclo Works: A Glimpse into the User Experience
One of the core features of Opclo is our Place Alerts system. Imagine this: You’re planning to visit a popular café, only to discover once you arrive that it’s closed for renovations. Opclo prevents these unexpected surprises by showing real-time alerts on the place’s details page. You can see if other users have verified the information (via thumbs-ups), and you can quickly decide whether to proceed, adjust your plans, or check out alternative locations.
Another scenario unfolds if you’re already at a destination. In this case, Opclo’s homepage features a pull-down alert section that gives you immediate updates related to your current spot. Maybe there’s a change in operating hours or an ongoing event that you should know about. This pull-down is crucial—it puts vital information at your fingertips, helps you bookmark places you love, and even lets you confirm or dispute alerts with a single tap.
Continuous Monitoring and Improvement
We’re committed to tracking our app’s performance and your experience every step of the way. To do this, we rely on multiple monitoring tools. Firebase helps us measure key analytics and events, App Store Connect shows us download and subscription trends, and platforms like App Annie and App Radar assist in optimizing our App Store presence. Each metric, data point, and user review guides us towards making Opclo better and more attuned to what you really need.
